“Lighting makes a bigger difference than people think. Even just some solar-powered motion lights by entryways or along paths can spook someone off.”

Couldn’t agree more on the solar lights. I put a couple around my place—cheap, easy, and no wiring headaches. I also swapped out some old shrubs for native plants that don’t block windows but still look good. Less hiding spots, less water use. Funny thing, after I did that, my neighbor asked if I’d had a break-in or something... just goes to show how much landscaping can change the vibe.

Funny you mention that—I've worked on a few projects where just trimming back overgrown hedges made the whole street feel safer. People underestimate how much those "privacy" bushes can actually help someone hide. I’m all for native plants too, but I always tell folks to keep sightlines open near doors and windows. Lighting’s great, but if someone can duck behind a big shrub, it kinda defeats the purpose.

I get what you’re saying about keeping sightlines open, but I always wonder—how do you balance that with wanting some privacy? Like, I don’t love the idea of my living room being visible from the street, but I also don’t want someone sneaking around behind a giant bush. Has anyone tried using lower shrubs or maybe those thorny plants under windows? Does that actually work as a deterrent, or is it just wishful thinking? And for lighting, are motion lights enough, or do you need cameras too if you’re watching your wallet?

Thorny bushes under windows actually aren’t a bad idea—think of them as nature’s barbed wire. I’ve seen folks use things like holly or even roses for that. Keeps people from getting too close but doesn’t totally kill your curb appeal. For privacy, I’m a fan of sheer curtains. You get light, some privacy, and you’re not advertising your TV to the whole block. Motion lights work pretty well, but if you can swing a cheap camera (even a fake one), it can add an extra “don’t mess with me” vibe. It’s all about layers, really.

I get the idea behind thorny bushes, but I’ve seen more than a few folks regret it when they have to trim or weed around those things—especially roses. Ever tried to clean up after a windstorm with holly under your window? Curious if anyone’s had luck with just gravel or crunchy ground cover—it’s not as pretty, but you can hear anyone coming up. Motion lights are solid, though. I’d probably skip the fake cams since some folks spot them right away.
