If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?

TITLE: If You Had To Rig Up Your Own Home Security On A Tight Budget, What Would You Do?

You’re right about thorny bushes being a pain—tried barberry once and regretted it every time I had to weed around it. Gravel paths have actually worked out well for me; not the prettiest, but they do make it tough for anyone to sneak around quietly. Motion lights are a solid investment, especially the solar ones since you don’t have to mess with wiring. I agree on the fake cameras—most folks can tell, and they don’t really add much peace of mind. Sometimes simple deterrents like a “beware of dog” sign (even if you don’t have one) can help too.

Yeah, gravel’s underrated. I’ve got it along the side of my place and you can’t take two steps without making a racket. I’m with you on the motion lights—solar is the way to go, especially if you’ve got a big yard. I’d add that even a cheap smart doorbell cam pays off, if you watch for sales. Real-time alerts beat fake cameras any day, in my experience.

Honestly, I used to think fake cameras were enough—just stick one up and hope for the best. Turns out, people aren’t that easy to fool anymore. Picked up a Wyze cam on clearance and it’s been solid for the price. Gravel’s smart too, but I wish it didn’t track into the house so much... trade-offs, I guess. Solar lights have been hit or miss for me depending on the brand.

Gravel’s such a double-edged sword, right? Looks good, but it’s like a magnet for dirt inside. I’m curious—has anyone tried integrating security stuff with landscaping? Like, do you think motion lights hidden in planters or along pathways actually help, or do they just end up blinding you when you come home late? I’ve seen some setups that look great in photos, but I wonder if they’re practical day-to-day.

Motion lights in planters can work, but placement is everything. I put a couple along my walkway and aimed them low—helps me see without blinding myself. They do spook raccoons more than people, though. Gravel’s noisy, which is actually a plus for security... but yeah, it tracks everywhere.
