Title: If You Had To Rig Up Your Own Home Security On A Tight Budget, What Would You Do?

I get the urge to go all-in after something like a break-in—totally valid. But I’ve found that layering a few simple, well-placed devices can actually be pretty effective, even on a budget. For example, I started with window sensors and a couple of motion lights outside. Then, over time, I added cameras and reinforced the locks. It’s not about going barebones, but more about building up in stages. Sometimes the “simple” stuff, if you’re strategic, can buy you a lot of peace of mind without breaking the bank.

Couldn’t agree more—people underestimate how much a $20 motion light or even a fake camera can do. I once rigged up an old smartphone as a security cam with a free app and it worked surprisingly well. Also, I swapped my strike plates for longer screws (like 3-inchers), which made the doors feel way sturdier. Not glamorous, but honestly, most burglars aren’t looking to work that hard.

Honestly, I think people get sucked into the idea that you need a fancy alarm system or monthly monitoring, but simple stuff like you mentioned does a ton. I’ve done the long screws in the doorframes too—makes a huge difference. Have you ever tried reinforcing window locks or adding those cheap sliding door bars? I always wonder if I’m overthinking it or if it’s actually worth doubling up on those weak spots. Sometimes it feels like there’s always one more thing you could do...

I hear you on the feeling of “is it ever enough?” Sometimes it seems like you could reinforce every window and door and still worry. I’ve put in those sliding door bars and honestly, they’re so cheap and easy, I figured why not. But I do wonder—have you ever looked at the hinges on your exterior doors? I realized mine were exposed and swapped to security hinges with non-removable pins. Curious if anyone’s actually had a break-in attempt foiled by these little upgrades, or if it’s just peace of mind...

Honestly, I’ve seen a lot of folks put faith in those upgrades, but I’m not convinced they’re more than a speed bump for someone determined. Here’s what I’d focus on for budget security:

- Longer screws in strike plates and hinges (most people skip this, but it makes a difference).
- Motion sensor lights—cheap, and they really do freak people out.
- Actual visibility—trimmed bushes, no hiding spots near doors.

Ever tried reinforcing the door frame itself? In my experience, that’s where most doors fail, not the hinges. Curious if anyone’s gone that route and noticed a difference.
