NO MORE FUMBLING FOR KEYS: DID YOU KNOW THIS?
I get the hesitation around smart locks in the cold, but honestly, I’ve had more issues with frozen keyholes than with electronics. One winter, I spent ten minutes trying to thaw out a lock with my hands turning numb—meanwhile, my neighbor just tapped his code and was inside before I even got my keys out. Not saying smart locks are perfect, but sometimes old-school isn’t as reliable as we remember, especially when ice gets involved. Maybe it’s just luck of the draw...

That’s been my experience too. Mechanical locks can seize up fast in freezing temps. With a smart lock, I just use my phone—no digging for keys, no frozen fingers. Battery life is solid even in winter, though I do keep a spare just in case.
I get the appeal—no more frozen keys or standing outside cursing at a stubborn lock. But I still worry about tech glitches or the app not connecting when I’m in a rush. That said, I’ve seen enough traditional locks jam up in winter to know they’re not exactly foolproof either. Maybe it’s just trading one set of problems for another, but at least with smart locks, you’re not stuck scraping ice off your doorknob at 7am... That’s worth something.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve got a few hesitations about smart locks that keep me sticking with the old-school kind:
- Battery life is a real thing. If you forget to swap them out (and who really remembers on schedule?), you could be locked out anyway.
- Tech glitches aren’t just “maybe”—I’ve had friends get stuck outside because the app updated or their Wi-Fi dropped. Not fun in the rain.
- With a regular lock, you can always call a locksmith or jimmy it open if it’s frozen. When electronics fail, sometimes there’s just no workaround.
Not saying traditional locks are perfect—definitely had my share of frozen fingers and key wrestling matches—but at least I know what I’m dealing with. Smart locks feel like adding another layer of stuff that can go wrong, especially if you’re not super techy. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but sometimes low-tech is less stressful.
I had the same concerns before moving in, honestly. Ended up picking a smart lock with a physical key backup just in case. Battery warnings are pretty loud, but I still keep a spare key hidden outside—old habits die hard. It’s not perfect, but I like not digging for keys with groceries in hand.
