Why does my browser keep forgetting stuff?

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from—browser sync feels like a gamble half the time. I’ve had Chrome just randomly nuke my saved passwords and autofill stuff after an update and it’s a pain to rebuild. But I’m always a bit wary of those standalone managers too... what if their company folds or they get hacked? Ever run into any issues with exporting data or moving between different password apps? That’s the part that always makes me nervous.

Honestly, I kind of see it the other way around. I trust standalone password managers more than browser sync, weird as that sounds. Browsers just aren’t built with security as their main focus—convenience, sure, but not hardcore protection. I’ve had Chrome and Firefox both randomly wipe my saved stuff after updates or profile glitches, and there’s zero recourse if it happens.

With dedicated managers, at least you get robust export options and some transparency about encryption. Yeah, there’s always a risk a company could go under or get breached, but most of the reputable ones let you export your vault in a pretty standard format—CSV or JSON usually—so you’re not totally locked in. I’ve switched between Bitwarden and 1Password before without too much hassle. The process isn’t flawless, but it’s way better than trying to extract passwords from a corrupted browser profile.

I get the nerves about trusting a third party, though. It’s all trade-offs. But relying on browsers has burned me more times than any password manager ever has...

- Had a similar headache last year—browser update wiped out all my saved logins and bookmarks overnight.

- That rings true. I use a password manager now, but honestly, I still keep a backup on paper for the really important stuff.
- Exporting from browsers is always clunky. One time I tried to recover passwords from an old Chrome profile and it was a mess—half the stuff didn’t transfer right.
- Not saying password managers are perfect, but at least you know what you’re getting into. Browsers feel like a gamble sometimes...

Funny timing—I just had to dig through an old backup drive for bookmarks I thought were gone forever. It’s wild how browsers can feel so solid one day and then just... poof, stuff’s missing. Has anyone actually had a browser sync work flawlessly across devices? I always end up with duplicates or missing things.

I hear you—browser sync always sounds great on paper, but in practice? I’ve had Chrome randomly drop half my bookmarks after an update, and Edge isn’t much better. I’m starting to wonder if it’s something with the way profiles get handled, or maybe syncing too many devices at once just confuses things. Has anyone tried exporting bookmarks manually as a backup, or is that just asking for more headaches?
