If you could track exactly how much your heating and cooling costs, would you change your habits?

I've been thinking lately about how much money I probably waste on heating and cooling without even realizing it. Like, I know my AC runs a lot in the summer, but I don't really have a clear idea of how much it's costing me day-to-day or hour-by-hour. Imagine if there was some kind of easy-to-use system that showed you exactly how much energy your HVAC was using at any given moment—like a real-time dashboard or something.

Would seeing those numbers actually make you adjust your thermostat more often or maybe upgrade to more efficient equipment? Or do you think you'd just shrug it off after a while and go back to your usual habits? I'm kinda torn myself...part of me thinks I'd become obsessed with checking it constantly, but another part thinks I'd probably just ignore it after the novelty wore off, you know?

Curious what others think they'd do if they had that kind of detailed info right in front of them.

Honestly, I think most people would stop caring pretty quickly. I got one of those smart energy monitors last year—checked it religiously for about two weeks, now it's just another app on my phone I never open...

Yeah, I think you're onto something there. When we built our place, I got pretty into tracking energy use at first—especially since everything was brand new and I wanted to see how efficient it all was. But after a month or so, it just became background noise. Now I only glance at it if the bill seems unusually high. It's useful info to have, sure, but realistically most of us aren't gonna change our daily habits much once the initial curiosity fades.

Yeah, that's pretty relatable. I remember when we first moved into our current place, I was obsessed with tweaking the thermostat and checking usage constantly. But after a while, life just kinda takes over and it fades into the background... guess we're all creatures of habit in the end.

Title: Tracking HVAC Costs - Personal Experience

- Had a similar setup installed when renovating our place—real-time energy monitoring for heating/cooling.
- Initially, checked it constantly and made small adjustments; definitely saw some savings.
- Over time, though, the novelty wore off and I reverted to comfort-first habits.
- Still useful occasionally to pinpoint inefficiencies or justify upgrading equipment, but day-to-day behavior didn't change drastically long-term.
