BUILDING GREENER: SIMPLE SWAPS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

I hear you on the cost. In a few of my projects, we’ve had to make similar calls—sometimes you just patch things up until the budget allows for a proper overhaul. Those foam strips aren’t pretty, but they do the job in a pinch. Long-term, though, I’ve seen those quick fixes add up if you’re replacing them every year... Still, sometimes it’s just about getting through another winter without freezing or breaking the bank.

Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen those foam strips peeling off after a year or two. They’re like the duct tape of weatherproofing—good in a pinch, but not exactly a long-term strategy. If you can swing it, investing in better sealing or even upgrading windows pays off over time. I get that budgets are tight, but sometimes the “cheap fix” ends up costing more when you add up all the replacements... and the drafts still sneak through anyway.

I totally get what you mean about the foam strips—they never seem to last. Has anyone tried those silicone weather seals instead? I’m curious if they actually hold up better or if it’s just more hype.

Tried the silicone seals on a few projects—honestly, they’re a step up from foam. They don’t compress as much over time, and you’re not dealing with that crumbly mess after a year or two. They cost a bit more, but in my experience, you get what you pay for. If you’re after longevity and less hassle, silicone’s worth it.

I’ve had a similar experience with silicone seals, especially on exterior doors. The upfront cost did make me pause, but after seeing how well they held up through two winters—no drafts, no weird shrinking or cracking—I was sold. Foam always seemed like a quick fix, but I’d end up replacing it way too soon.

One thing I noticed, though, is that not all silicone products are created equal. Some cheaper brands still started to yellow or get brittle after a while. It’s worth checking for certifications or at least some kind of environmental rating if you’re aiming for a greener build.

Honestly, these little swaps add up. Even just switching out weatherstripping can cut down on energy loss more than people realize. It’s not the flashiest upgrade, but it’s one of those things you appreciate every time your heating bill comes in a bit lower...
