Honestly, you’re not alone—those old PDFs are a nightmare. I’ve seen folks get tripped up by mismatched lines or faded markings more times than I can count. Borrowing a metal detector was a smart move, though. Even then, it’s tough to feel confident without a recent survey. It’s wild how something as basic as knowing your own boundaries can turn into a scavenger hunt. If it helps, even with the fancy online maps, I still double-check everything on site. Sometimes the old-school methods are the only way to get close to the truth.

That’s been my experience too. The online tools are handy for a quick look, but I’ve seen property lines on those maps be off by several feet. What’s worked for me is printing out everything—old surveys, county GIS screenshots, even hand-drawn notes—and walking the lot with a tape measure. If you can find any original survey pins with a metal detector, mark them and compare to your paperwork. It’s not foolproof, but it’s usually enough to avoid major mistakes. Just don’t trust a single source, especially if you’re planning to dig or build.

Funny you mention the tape measure—last year I was working on a remodel and the “official” online map had the neighbor’s shed halfway into my client’s future sunroom. Turned out, after some muddy boots and a lot of squinting at faded survey markers, the shed was exactly where it should be. Those digital maps are great until you’re standing in the weeds trying to figure out if you’re about to dig up your own cable line or someone else’s. I always say, trust but verify... and maybe bring snacks, because it never goes as fast as you think.
