Interesting, I've actually found fabric wrapping pretty helpful, but you're rightβit definitely depends on soil type. With heavy clay here, skipping fabric led to clogged pipes in no time. Gravel alone just didn't cut it... guess drainage really isn't one-size-fits-all.
Had a similar experience when developing a property on clay-heavy ground. Initially thought gravel alone would do the trick, but nope... ended up with standing water after every rainstorm. Fabric wrapping definitely improved things, but honestly, I found adding a slight slope to the drainage pipes made the biggest difference. Makes me wonder if it's less about fabric vs gravel and more about getting the angle just right?
