Totally agree—skimping on shingles can really come back to bite you, especially if you’re in a spot with wild weather swings. I’ve seen some gorgeous homes lose their charm fast because the roof aged so badly. There’s definitely a balance... but I’d lean toward mid-range or better for the visible stuff. No one wants their “new” roof looking tired after just a couple summers.
