I had a similar experience—our first roofer pushed for a total replacement too, but a second opinion saved us big time. Regarding alternative materials, we went with metal roofing about five years ago. It's pricier upfront, but honestly, the durability and low maintenance are impressive. Plus, it reflects heat better, so we've noticed some savings on cooling bills. Haven't tried solar tiles yet... intriguing idea, though I'm still skeptical about their longevity and efficiency compared to traditional solar panels.

Interesting you mention solar tiles—I was just reading about them the other day. They seem pretty sleek, but yeah, I'm also wondering how they'd hold up over time compared to regular panels. I mean, traditional solar panels have been around long enough that we kinda know what we're getting into, right? But solar tiles... feels like they're still working out the kinks.

On the metal roofing front, did you notice any issues with noise during heavy rain or hail? I've heard mixed things—some folks say it's barely noticeable with proper insulation, others complain it's like living inside a drum set. We're considering metal for our next project, but that's one thing that's got me hesitating a bit.

I get the hesitation about metal roofs and noise. Honestly, it really depends on how well your attic or ceiling space is insulated. My cousin put one in a few years back, and I was skeptical at first too—thought it'd be like camping under a tarp every time it rained. But I stayed over during a pretty nasty storm once, and it wasn't bad at all. You could hear the rain, sure, but it was more like white noise rather than anything annoying. Hail might be another story though... haven't experienced that firsthand, but I'd imagine larger hailstones might be louder.

As for the solar tiles, I share your skepticism. They look great, but durability and long-term maintenance are still question marks. Regular panels have proven themselves over decades, so it's tough to jump into something relatively untested, especially given the upfront costs involved. Maybe give it a couple more years to see how they hold up in real-world conditions?

We had a metal roof on our old place, and honestly, rain wasn't an issue at all—just a gentle tapping sound. But hail...yeah, that got pretty intense. Felt like someone tossing gravel up there. Still, insulation makes a huge difference.

Ha, that's exactly why I'm hesitating on metal. I love the idea of a metal roof—durable, sleek look, energy-efficient and all—but the hail stories give me pause. Did you ever notice any actual dents or damage afterward? I'm trying to balance cost and durability here... asphalt shingles seem cheaper upfront but metal might save money in the long run. Decisions, decisions...
