Been thinking about building our own place to save some cash, but I'm torn between going full DIY or hiring professionals. DIY seems cheaper upfront, but worried about hidden costs or messing something up big time. Anyone tried either route and got thoughts?

I've seen both sides of this coin with clients and friends, and honestly, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. From what I've observed:

- DIY definitely cuts upfront costs, especially if you're handy and have some experience. But the hidden costs can sneak up on you—things like permits, specialized tools, or even just fixing mistakes you didn't anticipate. Had a friend who tried DIY-ing their own kitchen remodel to save money...ended up spending twice their budget because plumbing went sideways. Ouch.

- Pros usually cost more upfront, but they're pros for a reason. They know the ins and outs, handle permits, and generally avoid costly rookie mistakes. Plus, having someone accountable if things go wrong is a huge stress-reliever. But yeah, it can get pricey fast, especially if you don't shop around or clearly define your scope from the start.

Maybe consider a hybrid approach? You could handle simpler tasks yourself (like painting, flooring, or interior finishes), and leave structural stuff like electrical, plumbing, or foundation work to professionals. That way you get some savings without risking major disasters.

Also, think about your time. DIY sounds great until you're spending every weekend for months on end covered in sawdust and drywall dust...trust me, it gets old fast. If you're juggling work or family life too, factor in how much your free time is worth.

Curious—have you tackled any big DIY projects before? Might be worth testing the waters with something smaller first to see how comfortable you feel before diving into a full build.
