Making the switch to water-saving toilets: Worth it?
MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?
Had a similar experience on a remodel last year - first install was a pain, mostly because the flange was just a hair off and the new toilet didn’t want to play nice. Once we sorted that out and swapped to a model with a slightly bigger trapway, it’s been solid. I do think the water savings are real, but you’re right, it’s not like your bill gets cut in half or anything. Still, less noise at night and fewer worries about leaks... I’ll take those wins any day.

Yeah, I get the appeal, but I’m curious - did you notice any difference in how often you had to clean it? I’ve heard some models need more scrubbing because of the lower water flow. Worth the trade-off, or just more hassle?

Honestly, I haven’t noticed a huge difference in cleaning frequency. Maybe a little more with certain brands, but nothing crazy. The bigger issue for me was the occasional double flush - kind of defeats the purpose if you have to flush twice, right? Still, the water savings add up over time. If you get a decent model, it’s not really more hassle, just takes a bit to get used to.
MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?
I switched out all the old toilets in my last place for low-flow models, and honestly, the adjustment period was pretty quick. Yeah, sometimes you might need a second flush if you’re dealing with, uh, more “challenging” situations, but it wasn’t a constant hassle. Cleaning-wise, I didn’t notice much extra work - maybe a little more with one brand that had a weird bowl shape. The water bill dropped noticeably though, which made up for any minor annoyances. If you pick a reputable model (I went with Toto), you’ll probably be fine.
Totally get where you’re coming from. I was on the fence for a while because I worried about the double-flush thing, but honestly, the savings on my water bill made it worth it pretty quick. It’s not perfect, but it’s a solid trade-off if you’re watching expenses. Picking a good brand really does make a difference - some of the cheaper ones just don’t cut it.
