MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?

- Ran into the same mess last year—installed three different brands in one project, and now every service call is a scavenger hunt for parts.
- Water bills dropped, sure, but I swear the maintenance eats up the savings.
- Miss the days when you could swap a flapper in five minutes... now it’s a guessing game.

Totally get where you’re coming from. We swapped ours out a couple years back and yeah, the water bill dipped, but I’ve had to hunt down some weird parts more than once. It’s not as simple as it used to be—sometimes I just stare at the thing and wonder who designed it. Still, I try to remind myself it’s better for the planet, even if it means a few extra trips to the hardware store. Hang in there... it gets easier once you figure out which brand is least annoying.

I hear you on the parts issue—some of these newer models seem like they’re designed to confuse anyone who’s not a plumber. I’ve had a few installs where the savings looked good on paper, but then we had callbacks for clogs or weird flushes. Not saying it’s a dealbreaker, but I do miss the reliability of the old-school tanks. Still, water’s not getting any cheaper, so I get why people are making the switch. Just wish the tech was a bit more user-friendly.

You’re not alone—those new mechanisms can be a real puzzle, even for folks who are pretty handy. I’ve seen clients get frustrated with the learning curve, especially when it comes to troubleshooting. But honestly, once you get past that initial adjustment, most people don’t look back. If you’re worried about clogs, I’d suggest looking for models with a higher MaP rating—they tend to handle waste better. It’s not perfect, but the water savings do add up over time. Sometimes it just takes a bit of trial and error to find the right fit for your space.

I’ll be honest, I still have mixed feelings about these newer toilets. Sure, the water bill drops a bit, but I’ve had to go back and fix more clogs than I ever did with the old-school ones. Some models just don’t seem to handle, uh, “real world” use all that well. Has anyone found a brand that actually balances water savings and reliability? Or is it just a tradeoff we have to live with?
