MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?
- Totally get where you’re coming from on the clogging issue. I swapped to a dual-flush Toto in my new build, hoping for the best.
- Water bill did drop, but yeah, I’ve had to use the plunger more than before. Not a huge fan of that tradeoff.
- I did a bunch of research and found that flush valve size actually matters more than I expected. Some 1.28 GPF models have a wider valve and better “evacuation” power.
- Kohler and Toto seem to be the most reliable from what I’ve seen—avoid the super cheap ones at big box stores.
- If you’re handy, adjusting the water level just a bit higher can help with performance without wasting much extra water.
- Still not perfect, but at least it’s not as bad as some horror stories I’ve heard...
MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?
I’ll admit, I was skeptical about the water-savers too, mostly because I didn’t want to spend more fixing clogs than I’d save on my bill. Ended up with a Kohler after reading way too many reviews. It’s not perfect—sometimes needs a second flush—but the drop in my water bill was noticeable. Honestly, I’d rather deal with an extra flush here and there than pay for wasted water every month. Still, I do miss the “old school” power sometimes...
MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?
I get the appeal, but honestly, I’m not totally sold on these new water-saving toilets. When we built our place last year, we went with the “eco” models, thinking it’d be a no-brainer. But the number of times I’ve had to unclog or double-flush kinda kills the excitement. Sure, the water bill is lower, but sometimes I feel like I’m trading convenience for a few bucks saved. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather have a toilet that just works every time... even if it’s not as “green.”
MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?
I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had a different experience. We swapped out our old toilets for water-saving ones about two years ago, and honestly, the savings on our utility bill have added up more than I expected. There was a bit of a learning curve—some models just aren’t as powerful, but we ended up switching brands and it made a difference. Maybe it’s worth trying a different model before giving up on the “eco” route? It can be hit or miss depending on the brand... but for us, it’s paid off in the long run.
- Totally agree, the brand makes a huge difference.

“There was a bit of a learning curve—some models just aren’t as powerful, but we ended up switching brands and it made a difference.”
- In my last remodel, I went through three different models before finding one that actually felt “luxury” but still saved water.
- Some of the higher-end options have dual-flush and even heated seats—honestly, it’s wild what’s out there now.
- The upfront cost can sting, but the long-term savings and the feel-good eco factor are worth it for me.
- Just make sure to check reviews and maybe test one out if you can... not all “water-saving” toilets are created equal.
