If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?

I hear you on the boxwoods - way better than those “security roses” my neighbor swears by. I tried to prune one once and ended up looking like I’d wrestled a cat. Motion sensor lights are on my list, but I’m always worried they’ll just end up spotlighting every raccoon in the neighborhood at 3am. Do you find yours go off a lot for random stuff, or are they pretty reliable?

Also, about those window alarms - did you go with the stick-on kind from Amazon? I’ve seen some that are like $15 for a pack of ten, but I’m skeptical if they’re actually loud enough to scare anyone off. I’m all for cheap fixes, but sometimes it feels like you get what you pay for... Still, anything’s better than nothing, right?

IF YOU HAD TO RIG UP YOUR OWN HOME SECURITY ON A TIGHT BUDGET, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I get the hesitation with those stick-on window alarms. I tried a batch from Amazon once - honestly, they were more of a nuisance than a deterrent. The sound was sharp if you were right next to it, but I doubt it would carry far enough to scare off anyone determined. Plus, the adhesive started peeling after a few months, especially in the summer heat.

As for motion sensor lights, they can be hit or miss. The cheaper models are notorious for picking up every stray animal or even a gust of wind moving branches. I ended up investing a bit more in ones that let you adjust sensitivity and direction. That made a huge difference - now they only trigger when something substantial moves close to the house.

If you’re looking for budget-friendly but effective, sometimes it’s worth spending just a little extra for reliability. A fake security camera or two can also go a surprisingly long way as a visual deterrent... just don’t rely on them alone. Sometimes the peace of mind is worth skipping the absolute cheapest option.

Had a similar experience with those stick-on alarms - ended up with a pile of chirping plastic after a hot summer. What’s worked for me is planting thorny bushes under windows and making sure fences are in good shape. Sometimes old-school is best.

Sometimes old-school is best.

Can’t argue with that - nature’s barbed wire does a lot more than folks think. I’d add, don’t overlook decent deadbolts on every entry. Cheap motion lights by the doors help too. All those little layers add up... way more reliable than those stick-on gadgets in my experience.

I’m with you on the deadbolts - honestly, I think a solid lock is underrated these days. I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on fancy alarms, but if your back door’s got a flimsy latch, what’s the point? Motion lights are great too, especially if you’ve got pets that like to patrol the yard at night.

One thing I’d toss in: thorny shrubs under windows. Not the prettiest landscaping, but I swear nothing deters a would-be trespasser like a face full of rosebush. Also, have you tried those old-school window dowels? Just a cut piece of wood in the track - cheap, simple, and surprisingly effective.

Curious if anyone’s had luck with those fake security cameras? I’ve always wondered if they actually fool anyone or just end up as spider condos after a few months...
