Curious if anyone’s had luck with those fake security cameras? I’ve always wondered if they actually fool anyone or just end up as spider condos after a few months...
Honestly, I’m skeptical about the fake cameras. Maybe they work on someone just passing by, but anyone actually casing a place can usually spot the difference—especially if there’s no wiring or blinking light. Plus, like you said, they’re magnets for cobwebs and dust. I’d rather put that money toward better locks or even a basic real camera. As for thorny shrubs, I get the logic, but sometimes they end up being more of a hassle for the homeowner than any real deterrent. Maintenance can be a pain, and if you’re not careful, they can damage siding or block emergency exits.

Couldn’t agree more. Even the cheapest WiFi cams these days are way better than a dummy—at least you get an alert if something’s up. I’ve seen folks try to hide the lack of wiring on fake cameras with black tape, but it’s pretty obvious up close. If you’re handy, reinforcing door frames and swapping in beefier deadbolts goes a long way too. Shrubs are just extra yard work in my book... unless you really love pruning.
Honestly, the fake cam thing always seemed like wishful thinking to me. Most folks looking to break in can spot a dummy from across the yard. I’d rather spend on a used Wyze or Blink cam and some solid strike plates. Those little upgrades make a bigger difference than people think... and yeah, shrubs just collect spiders anyway.
I get what you mean about fake cams—my neighbor put up a plastic one and it just looked sad, honestly. I’m with you on the real cameras; even the older Wyze cams do the trick if you set them up right. Strike plates are underrated too, for sure. Have you ever tried those motion sensor lights? I’ve been thinking about adding some but not sure if they’re actually worth it or just as easy to ignore as a porch light left on.
