MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?

Honestly, your concerns about maintenance are pretty common, but in my experience, most modern water-saving toilets are designed to minimize clogs—especially if you stick with reputable brands. The early models had issues, but the tech’s improved a lot. I’ve put a few in homes over the past couple years and haven’t had complaints about constant plumber calls. As for style, there are definitely some sharp-looking options now... way beyond the bland stuff from a decade ago. The upfront cost can sting, but the long-term savings usually make up for it if your water rates are high. And yeah, I get what you mean about those flush buttons—they’re oddly satisfying.

I totally agree about the tech getting better—my old place had one of those early low-flow toilets and it was a nightmare. The new one in our custom build is way better, no issues so far. I was skeptical about the flush power but honestly, it’s been solid. Plus, seeing the water bill drop a bit each month is a nice bonus. The only thing I’d nitpick is some models are a little noisier, but that’s minor compared to the savings.

I get the appeal of saving water (and money), but I’ve actually had a mixed experience with the newer models. In our last reno, we went for a high-end dual-flush, and while it looked great, it sometimes needed a second flush for, well... bigger jobs. Not a dealbreaker, but it kind of defeats the purpose if you’re flushing twice. Maybe it’s just certain brands? The noise doesn’t bother me much, but I do wish performance was more consistent.

That’s exactly what I’m worried about. I’m planning my first build and keep hearing mixed reviews. Did you notice any difference between brands or models, or are they all kinda hit-or-miss?

From what I’ve seen on job sites, it’s not just brand—it’s the specific model and even the flush mechanism. Pressure-assisted types usually handle “bigger jobs” better than gravity-fed, but they’re louder. Have you looked into dual-flush options? Some folks swear by them, but I’m not totally convinced they solve the double-flush issue.
