Incentives only work if they’re easy to access.

That’s the key, isn’t it? I’ve seen clients get excited about rebates, then give up halfway through the paperwork. It’s wild how much red tape there is for something that should be a win-win. Real-time tracking would be a game changer—imagine seeing your savings instantly instead of waiting for a bill. Honestly, if cities want real results, they need to make these programs as seamless as possible. Otherwise, people just stick with what they know.

I get the frustration with paperwork, but I actually found the rebate process for my new place a bit easier than expected. Maybe it helped that I was already knee-deep in forms for everything else, but once I got the hang of their online portal, it wasn't too bad. Not saying it's perfect—real-time updates would be amazing—but sometimes just having clear instructions makes a world of difference. I do wonder if some folks give up before even starting because they assume it'll be a nightmare...

Honestly, I’m with you on the paperwork dread, but if there’s money on the table, I’ll slog through just about anything. The rebate for my low-flow toilet was a pain at first—had to dig up receipts from the Stone Age—but once I figured out their online thing, it was way less painful. I do think a lot of people just see “rebate” and immediately nope out, though. If they made it even a little bit easier (or, like you said, gave real-time updates), I bet more folks would jump in. I mean, who doesn’t want to get paid for using less water?

Honestly, I get the appeal of rebates, but I’m not convinced they’re the best motivator for everyone. In my experience, folks with bigger homes or more complicated systems just want a straightforward process—no hoops, no chasing receipts. Sometimes, the rebate doesn’t even cover the hassle or the upfront cost, especially if you’re upgrading multiple fixtures. I’d rather see cities offer instant discounts at purchase, or even just lower water rates for proven usage drops. That feels more direct and less like a paperwork marathon.

Totally hear you on the paperwork marathon. It’s wild how many clients get excited about a rebate, then lose steam when they see what’s actually required. I’ve seen people just skip the upgrades because the process feels so drawn out. Instant discounts at point of sale would make a huge difference—less friction, more follow-through. And honestly, water rates that reward real savings? That’s a lot more motivating for folks juggling big renos.
