If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?

Just don’t expect miracles from an old iPhone taped to the window... unless you want to watch your cat knock it down every other day.

That made me laugh—my dog once set off a motion sensor and I got a frantic alert while I was at dinner. I totally agree about physical upgrades being underrated. But I’m curious, has anyone tried those fake security cameras? I always wonder if they actually deter anyone or if it’s just wishful thinking.

I’ve actually used those fake cameras outside my garage. Honestly, I think they work... at least for casual passersby. They look convincing enough from a distance, especially with the little blinking light. Not sure a determined thief would be fooled, but for the price, it’s not a bad layer.

DIY SECURITY ON A SHOESTRING

I’ve actually tried a mix of real and fake cameras around a project I did for a friend’s lake house. The fake ones with the blinking light definitely catch your eye, but I always wonder—if someone’s really scoping out the place, would they spot the difference? I guess it depends on how much effort you put into making them look legit. One trick I used was mounting them up high and running a bit of conduit to make it look like there’s wiring.

But honestly, I think lighting does just as much as cameras for deterrence. Motion sensor floodlights are cheap and easy to install, and they freak people out way more than a little red LED. Ever tried those solar-powered ones? They’re not perfect, but for a tight budget, they’re hard to beat.

Curious if anyone’s ever rigged up an old phone as a security cam? I’ve seen some clever setups using free apps, but I haven’t tried it myself. Wonder if it’s worth the hassle or just another thing to fiddle with...

That’s a solid approach, honestly. I did something similar when I first moved in—spent a weekend cobbling together a mix of “real” and “dummy” cameras from whatever I could find online. The trick is definitely in the details, like you mentioned. If you just slap a plastic dome on the wall at eye level, anyone half awake will figure it out, but if you put it up high and run even a short length of cable into the siding or through some conduit, it looks way more convincing. I even sprayed a couple with matte black paint to cut down on that cheap shiny plastic look.

Lighting makes a huge difference too. The first time one of those motion floodlights kicked on while I was taking out the trash, I nearly dropped the bags. It’s not subtle, but that’s kinda the point. The solar-powered ones are hit or miss—I’ve had two that died after one winter, but another is still going strong out by my shed. For $20ish apiece, can’t really complain.

About the old phone thing—yeah, it works better than you’d think. I used an old Android with Alfred Camera (free version) and set it up in my front window looking at the driveway. Only hassle is finding a way to keep it powered without looking messy. I ran a long USB cable behind the blinds and plugged it into an old phone charger—keeps it running 24/7. It sends motion alerts straight to your current phone, which is handy if you’re away or just want peace of mind at night.

If you’re worried about reliability or privacy with those free apps, just make sure to dig into their settings and turn off anything sketchy—some want access to way more than they need. But for low stakes stuff like monitoring your porch or shed? Totally worth the effort.

All in all, layering cheap tricks—fake cams, real cams where it counts, decent lighting—seems to be the sweet spot for getting peace of mind without breaking the bank.

Honestly, your setup sounds pretty clever. I always think the illusion is half the battle—if someone’s not sure what’s real, that’s already a deterrent. I’ve noticed the same thing with solar lights; some are basically disposable, but when they work, they’re a game changer. The old phone cam trick is underrated too. It’s kind of wild how much utility you can squeeze out of tech most people just toss in a drawer. Totally agree about digging through those app permissions though... some of them are weirdly nosy. All in all, love the layered approach—keeps things practical but still feels secure.
