How much does your house design actually help with the weather?

I moved into this older brick house last year, and honestly, I never really thought about how much the design would affect my comfort. Turns out, those thick walls keep it way cooler in the summer than my last place (which was all glass and metal, looked cool but felt like an oven). In winter, it’s not as drafty either. I guess there’s a reason people built houses like this around here? I’m starting to think maybe modern designs don’t always fit the local climate as well as the old ones did. Anyone else notice this? Or maybe I’m just getting old and cranky about energy bills...

Couldn’t agree more about the “dumb” stuff just working. I’ve seen houses with all the latest gadgets, but the minute there’s a hiccup, you’re stuck. Meanwhile, my old place has big windows you can actually open and a porch that keeps the sun off half the day. Not saying tech doesn’t have its place, but if you start with solid design—good orientation, shade, airflow—you don’t have to rely on fancy fixes as much. Sometimes simple really does win out.
