Why do old buildings look so different from modern ones?

I get what you mean about the “memory” in old wood. When we built our place, I tried every trick—wire brushes, vinegar, even burning the boards a bit. Still, it’s like you can’t fake decades of wear. But honestly, I’ll take new wiring and insulation over drafty windows any day. There’s something to be said for not having to worry about your house catching fire from a stray spark... even if the floors don’t creak the same way.

Right there with you—my last place had “character” in the form of a squirrel-sized gap under the back door. I tried to distress some new pine for our kitchen shelves, but there’s just something about the dents and grooves in old wood that you can’t quite copy. Still, I’ll trade that for not having to wear three sweaters indoors during winter. Creaky floors are charming... until you’re sneaking to the fridge at 2am.

Honestly, I get the nostalgia for old wood and quirky details, but after years of dealing with ancient wiring and single-pane windows, I’ll take modern comfort every time. There’s a reason insulation is code now. Charm’s great—until your heating bill triples.

Totally get that. I used to love the look of old houses, but after living in one with drafty windows and a furnace from the 60s... yeah, comfort wins. Modern insulation is a game changer. Still, I kinda miss those creaky floors sometimes.
