WHY DO OLD BUILDINGS LOOK SO DIFFERENT FROM MODERN ONES?
You’re not wrong about the weird stuff you find in old construction—sometimes it’s like a time capsule, sometimes it’s just a headache. But I’d argue a lot of those buildings have actually outlasted plenty of “modern” ones thrown up in the last 50 years. The difference is, back then, materials were often local and people built with what they had. Now, we’ve got stricter codes (for good reason), but also a lot of cookie-cutter designs and cheap materials that don’t age well. It’s possible to build new with character and durability, but it takes intention—and yeah, probably a bigger budget.
