WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

You’re definitely not alone in feeling that way. There’s a certain romance to upcycling, but the reality can be a lot messier than those before-and-after photos suggest. I’ve worked with clients who were excited about “giving new life” to old pieces, only to discover hidden water damage or hardware that just wouldn’t cooperate. Sometimes you end up spending more time and money than if you’d just started fresh.

That said, I do think there’s something satisfying about seeing the potential in an old piece—when it works out, anyway. But you’re right, it’s not always practical. Especially if you have a specific vision or need something to fit a tricky space, building from scratch is usually the way to go. You get control over dimensions, finishes, and materials, which makes the whole process more predictable (and honestly, less stressful).

I’ve had my fair share of “what did I get myself into?” moments with vintage furniture. Once spent an entire weekend trying to strip paint off a dresser, only to realize the wood underneath was too far gone. Ended up using it for firewood... not exactly the Pinterest-worthy result I’d hoped for.

At the end of the day, I think it comes down to what you value more—character or convenience. There’s no shame in wanting things clean and custom-fit. And hey, sometimes a fresh start is exactly what a space needs.

Totally get what you mean about the “romance” of upcycling vs. the reality. When we moved into our place, I was all about rescuing old chairs and tables from thrift stores—thought I’d have a house full of quirky, one-of-a-kind pieces. Turns out, sanding through three layers of mystery paint isn’t as fun as it looks on Instagram. Still, there’s something cool about giving an old thing a new story, even if it doesn’t always go as planned. Sometimes you just want something that fits perfectly and actually works, though. No shame in that at all.

That’s the truth. I’ve lost count of how many “quick” upcycle projects turned into weekend-long sagas—sometimes you end up with a cool story, sometimes just sore arms. Nothing wrong with wanting something that just works and fits your space, either. Custom builds can be way more satisfying when you need that exact fit. Both have their place, honestly... it’s all about picking your battles.
