Weekend crafts: do you prefer building from scratch or upcycling old stuff?

Quick poll for the crafty folks lurking around here—when you get the urge to make something, do you usually start with raw materials (like, wood planks, fabric, etc.) or do you like to repurpose stuff you already have lying around? I always think I’m gonna be the person who builds a bookshelf from scratch, but then I see an old crate or busted chair and suddenly I’m all about “giving it new life,” lol. I guess both have their charm, but sometimes upcycling feels a bit more satisfying? Or maybe just less intimidating than measuring and cutting everything perfectly. Anyway, curious what everyone else tends to do. Do you have a go-to method or do you just wing it depending on what’s in your garage?

I hear you on the price of good lumber—some of those hardwoods cost more than my monthly coffee habit. But I get a little stuck when upcycling if the old stuff isn’t square or has hidden nails. Ever try to make a bookshelf from a warped pallet? Not my finest hour. Do you just work with whatever you find, or do you hunt for specific pieces that fit your plans? Sometimes I wonder if I spend more time prepping salvaged wood than actually building...
