WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

- Had a similar dilemma with a bench last year. Used old deck boards, looked awesome at first.
- After one rainy season, half the boards warped or split. Kinda regretted not spending a bit more.
- Sometimes the “character” just means more repairs down the road, at least for outdoor stuff.
- Indoors, I’m all for upcycling—less exposure to weather, and the quirky look actually works.

Totally get what you mean about outdoor projects—weather just destroys some materials, no matter how cool they look at first. Indoors though, I love mixing upcycled pieces with new stuff. Gives a space so much personality and tells a story, you know? Sometimes the imperfections are what make it feel like home.

That’s the beauty of upcycling—those quirks and dings in old wood or hardware really do add character. I’ve found that when I try to design a “perfect” space with all new materials, it can end up feeling kind of sterile, almost like a showroom instead of somewhere you actually want to hang out. But then again, there’s something satisfying about building from scratch and having total control over every detail.

I do wonder though, how do you decide which pieces are worth saving and which should just be replaced? Sometimes I get attached to stuff that’s honestly way past its prime, just because it’s got a story behind it. Other times, I’ll strip something down and realize the bones just aren’t there anymore. Curious if anyone else struggles with letting things go when they don’t quite fit the vision...

I get what you mean about the sentimental attachment—sometimes it’s tough to be objective. I usually try to look at structural integrity first. If the core is solid, I’ll invest the time, but if it’s warped or brittle, I move on. There’s a balance between character and function, and sometimes nostalgia clouds that judgment. I’ve had to let go of a few pieces I really liked, just because they’d end up being more headache than they’re worth. It’s not always easy, though...

Yeah, I totally get that—sometimes you just want to save a piece because it’s got history, even if it’s barely holding together. I’ve run into that with old beams or doors; sometimes they look great but are just too far gone. Ever tried reinforcing something just for the sake of keeping the original? I’ve done it a couple times, but honestly, sometimes starting fresh is just less hassle. Still, there’s something satisfying about giving an old piece new life… guess it depends on the project.
