WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

That unpredictability with reclaimed wood is a real challenge. I’ve had similar issues - hidden fasteners, warped boards, even old paint that turned out to be lead-based. It’s definitely not as straightforward as working with new lumber, where you can count on uniformity and structural integrity. But there’s something about the patina and history in old materials that you just can’t replicate.

One thing I’ve found helpful is doing a pretty thorough inspection before committing to a piece - checking for soft spots, running a magnet over the surface for nails, that sort of thing. Even then, surprises happen. Sometimes it feels like you spend more time prepping than actually building.

I get why people stick to new materials, especially if you’re on a tight timeline or budget. But when it works out, upcycling can give a project so much more character. Maybe it’s just about knowing what you’re getting into and being ready to pivot if things go sideways... which they often do.

WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

I get the appeal of upcycling, but honestly, I lean toward new materials for most builds. The consistency just saves me a ton of headaches, especially when I’m trying to get precise joints or need everything square. I’ve had reclaimed wood projects where nothing lines up, and I end up spending double the time just making things fit. Sure, the character’s cool, but sometimes I’d rather just get it done and know it’ll last. Maybe I’m just not patient enough for all the surprises...

I totally get where you’re coming from - trying to square up old, warped boards can be a pain. I once tried to turn an old pallet into a coffee table and ended up with something that wobbled no matter what I did. But I keep going back to upcycling because it’s just so much cheaper, and sometimes you stumble on materials with a ton of character. Do you ever factor in cost when you decide, or is it more about the end result for you?

Honestly, cost is always in the back of my mind, but I get hung up on the end result too. If I’m building something that needs to last, I’ll splurge on new lumber. For quick projects or stuff with “character,” upcycling wins - warped boards and all. Sometimes you just have to embrace the wobble...

I get what you mean about cost vs. quality. I’m always torn - like, is it really worth paying double for new materials if I’m just making a planter box for the backyard? On the other hand, I’ve had upcycled stuff fall apart way sooner than I expected. Do you ever regret using reclaimed wood when it doesn’t hold up, or is the “character” worth the hassle?
