Totally agree with “planning is key.” I actually made a spreadsheet for each room and listed out what gets plugged in where. It sounds over the top, but it helped me avoid those “outlet behind the dresser” situations. One thing I didn’t expect—charging stations. We ended up needing more USB outlets in the kitchen and mudroom than anywhere else.

I’d skip random extras unless you’ve got a clear plan.

Couldn’t agree more. I’d add: think about furniture layout before finalizing outlet spots. Saved me from a few regrets.

That’s honestly the thing I underestimated most. I thought I had it all mapped out, but then the sectional I fell in love with was way bigger than planned and totally blocked two outlets. Ended up using extension cords for a while—kind of defeats the custom vibe, right? Also, didn’t realize how many gadgets end up in the kitchen... coffee maker, mixer, phone chargers, even a speaker. Next time, I’d probably add a couple more outlets just in case.

Totally get that—extension cords always feel like a bandaid over a design hiccup. One trick I use with clients is to literally tape out furniture on the floor before finalizing outlet locations. It’s wild how different things look in real space vs. on paper. And yeah, kitchens are sneaky with gadgets... I always suggest at least two more outlets than you think you’ll need. Worst case, you’ve got a spot for a future air fryer or whatever the next kitchen craze is.

Honestly, you’re spot on about outlets—people always underestimate how many they’ll want, especially as tech keeps creeping into every room. I’ve seen folks regret not thinking about charging stations in mudrooms or even outlets in closets for vacuums. One thing I’d add is to walk the space with a phone charger in hand and see where you naturally want to plug in. It’s surprising how often the “perfect spot” isn’t where you’d expect on the plans. Ever notice how nobody wants to crawl behind a couch to plug something in?

That’s actually a really smart tip with the phone charger. I’m always worried about adding too many outlets because of cost, but then again, it’s way more expensive to add them later. I never thought about closets or mudrooms for charging stuff—makes sense now that you mention it. I guess it’s one of those things where you don’t realize what you’re missing until you move in and start living with it. Planning ahead feels overwhelming, but little details like this probably save a lot of hassle (and money) down the road.
