Yeah, water lettuce looks awesome floating around, but I’ve definitely had a few “root invasions” over the years. I’ve actually found gravel barriers more hassle than they’re worth. In my case, the gravel just collected debris and made cleaning a nightmare—plus, roots still found a way through over time. Instead, I switched to using landscape fabric inside the mesh baskets, then added a thin layer of pea gravel on top. That seems to slow root escape and keeps things tidier for less money. Not perfect, but it’s cut down on pump clogs and I don’t have to pull everything apart as often. The wild look’s cool, but yeah... when it means weekly pump surgery, I’m out.
