Not for the faint of heart. Does anyone actually regret going with flat land after seeing the maintenance bills from hillside builds?

I used to be all about the hillside dream too, but after actually going through the process of building, I’m not so sure it’s worth the hassle. The views are cool, but the extra costs for retaining walls, drainage, and just getting materials up there add up fast. We ended up on a flat lot and honestly, I don’t feel like we missed out. We did a big sliding glass wall and some skylights, and it feels super open and bright.
I do wonder though—does anyone regret not having that “elevated” look? Like, do you ever feel like your house is just... too flat? Or is it more about how you use the space inside and out? I keep second-guessing if we should’ve tried harder for a hill spot, but then I remember how much easier it was to build on flat ground.

I get where you’re coming from. We just finished our first build on a flat lot, and honestly, I don’t feel like we lost anything by skipping the hill. Sure, the “elevated” look is cool in photos, but I’d rather have a house that’s easy to maintain and doesn’t stress me out every time it rains. Plus, you can do a lot with landscaping and big windows to make things feel dramatic. I think it’s more about how you use the space than the slope under it.
