GLASS CABINETS LOOK GREAT, BUT...
I totally get the struggle with keeping glass cabinets looking “curated” all the time. We’re picking finishes for our new place and I keep going back and forth—love the look, but I’m not exactly a minimalist when it comes to mugs and random bowls. Has anyone tried mixing glass uppers with open shelving? Wondering if that’s just doubling the chaos or if it actually works in practice...

We did a combo in our last build—glass uppers on one wall, open shelves on another. Here’s what I noticed:
- Glass cabinets definitely force you to keep things “display ready.” If you’re not a fan of constant tidying, it can get old fast.
- Open shelves are even less forgiving. Dust is real, and random mugs look even more random out in the open.
- Mixing both? Honestly, it looked cool at first, but I found myself shuffling stuff around all the time to keep it from looking cluttered. My partner joked it was like playing Tetris with dishes.
- If you love your collection and don’t mind a little organized chaos, it can work. But if mismatched bowls drive you nuts, maybe stick with one or the other.
One thing that helped: using baskets or matching containers on the open shelves for the less “pretty” stuff. Not perfect, but it kept things from feeling too chaotic.

I get what you’re saying about the “display ready” pressure, but honestly, I’ve found glass uppers way easier to manage than open shelves. At least with glass, you can close the doors and still keep dust out—open shelving is just a magnet for grime. I actually like the mix because it gives you a chance to show off nice stuff and stash the rest. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather wipe a smudge off glass than have to deep clean everything on an open shelf every week...
