MESH VS GLASS: THE CLEANING DILEMMA

I’m right there with you about mesh being more forgiving when you’ve got little ones and a dog barreling through the house. We went with mesh for our patio doors, mostly because I couldn’t picture myself scrubbing nose prints off glass every weekend. But yeah, after just two summers, I can already feel the mesh getting a bit stiff...not cracking yet, but it’s not as flexible as when it was new.

Funny thing—my neighbor swears by her self-cleaning glass panels, but I still see her out there with a spray bottle and paper towels. Maybe it’s just marketing hype? I guess there’s no real “set it and forget it” option yet.

MESH VS GLASS: THE CLEANING DILEMMA

I’ve wondered the same about those “self-cleaning” glass panels. My cousin installed them last year and honestly, they still get streaky after a rainstorm. Mesh definitely hides the grime better, but I do worry about it getting brittle over time. Has anyone tried replacing just the mesh instead of the whole frame when it starts to go? Seems like it could be a decent middle ground...

I actually swapped out just the mesh on a couple of our screens last fall. It wasn’t too bad—just needed a spline roller and some patience. The frames were still solid, so it felt wasteful to toss the whole thing. Mesh does get brittle after a few years, especially in direct sun, but replacing it is way cheaper than new frames. Glass looks nice, but the streaks drive me nuts... I’d rather deal with mesh repairs than constant cleaning.
