- Totally get where you’re coming from.
- Photos can be helpful, but they don’t always capture the details inspectors are looking for—especially with stuff like vent angles or hidden ductwork.
- I’ve had projects where we spent extra time and money getting “proof” that didn’t even answer their questions.
- Sometimes it feels like a checklist exercise rather than real problem-solving.
- Honestly, your idea about walkthroughs makes sense, but yeah, not always practical.
- Hang in there—it’s frustrating, but you’re definitely not alone dealing with this.

Totally agree—photos just don’t cut it for stuff like vent placement or when you’ve got to show how the ducting’s routed through a wall. I’ve started sketching quick diagrams over photos, almost like annotating them, and sometimes that helps clarify things for inspectors. Not always foolproof, but it’s less hassle than tearing open a ceiling. Has anyone tried using video walkthroughs or 3D scans? Curious if that actually gets past the “checklist” mentality or just adds more steps...

STRUGGLING WITH VENTILATION INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS LATELY

Honestly, video walkthroughs are hit or miss. I’ve tried them a couple times—sometimes the inspector appreciates the effort, other times they just want to see the physical checklist ticked off and don’t care about the extra detail. 3D scans are cool in theory but can be overkill unless you’re dealing with a really complex run. My go-to is still marking up photos with arrows and notes... less tech headache, more clarity. If only inspectors all agreed on what’s “enough,” right?

I get where you’re coming from with the photos and arrows—honestly, that’s been my fallback too, just because it’s quick and doesn’t require me to learn a new app every time. But I’ve actually had a couple of inspectors push back on that lately. One guy told me he “couldn’t verify scale” from my photos, even though I literally put a tape measure in the shot. Another wanted a video but then complained about the lighting and said he couldn’t see the damper labels clearly enough. It’s like, pick a lane, right?

I tried 3D scans once because someone convinced me it’d “future-proof” my documentation. Spent way too much on the rental, only for the inspector to say it was “impressive but unnecessary.” That stung a bit, not gonna lie. For what these inspections cost already, I’m not keen on shelling out for fancy tech unless it’s absolutely required.

Honestly, I’ve started just asking up front: “What do you want to see? Photos? Video? Checklist?” Sometimes they’ll give you a straight answer, sometimes they just say “follow code,” which is about as helpful as a screen door on a submarine. At this point, I’m convinced half of it comes down to who you get assigned that day.

If there was one thing I’d change, it’d be some kind of standard everyone actually sticks to—just tell me what box to tick and let me get on with my day. Until then, I’m sticking with basic photos and hoping for the best... unless someone tells me otherwise in writing.

- Totally get the frustration—ran into the same “can’t verify scale” line when I literally had a ruler in the shot. Made me wonder if they’re just looking for something to complain about.
- Video requests are even worse. Tried walking through slowly, but unless you’ve got pro lighting or a camera crew, someone’s always got a problem with it.
- I started taping a sticky note with the date and job number in every shot. Doesn’t solve everything but at least they can’t say I reused old pics.
- Agree 100% about the “follow code” answer being useless. It’s like, which code? Which section? Just spell it out for us...
- Until there’s an actual checklist, I’m sticking to basics too. Not dropping cash on gear unless they force me.
