STRUGGLING WITH VENTILATION INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS LATELY

That sticky note trick is genius—wish I’d thought of that before getting flagged for “old photos” on a job I literally finished the day before. I’m with you on not buying extra gear unless it’s absolutely necessary. I’ve been using my phone for everything, but sometimes I wonder if inspectors just want us to have fancy tools so they can tick a box. Has anyone actually had an inspection pass with just basic phone pics and notes, or is it always a back-and-forth?

Honestly, I’ve had a few pass with just phone pics and handwritten notes, but it really depends on the inspector. Some are cool with it, others act like you’re trying to pull a fast one if you don’t have timestamps or some fancy app. I get wanting to keep costs down, but sometimes I think investing in a cheap timestamp camera or a PDF scanner app saves a lot of hassle. Had one guy nitpick my phone photos because the file names were just numbers... go figure.

Had a similar run-in last year when I was finishing my basement. One inspector was fine with my quick phone snaps, but the next guy wanted everything labeled and dated, like I was submitting evidence or something. Ended up scribbling the date on a sticky note and holding it in the shot—looked goofy but it worked. Honestly, I get why they want proof, but sometimes it feels like overkill for a simple vent run.

That sticky note trick sounds familiar. I’ve had inspectors ask for everything from dated tape measures in the shot to full-on video walkthroughs, depending on their mood, I guess. One time, I was redoing a master bath and the inspector wanted every vent labeled with both the room name and the CFM rating—like I’m running a commercial job site or something. It’s wild how much it varies.

I get wanting things documented, but sometimes it feels like they’re just looking for reasons to slow you down. On bigger projects, I’ve started keeping a whiteboard handy just for this—write the date, snap the photo, move on. Not pretty, but it keeps everyone happy. Still, for a basic vent run? Seems like overkill to me too.

Is it just me, or do the requirements seem to change depending on which inspector you get? I’ve had one guy barely glance at the vents, then the next week someone else wants a full spreadsheet of CFM ratings and duct lengths. Makes me wonder if there’s actually a set standard or if it’s just up to whoever’s holding the clipboard that day. The whiteboard trick is clever, but honestly, how much documentation is too much for a couple of bathroom vents? Sometimes I feel like I’m prepping for an audit, not an inspection.
