Not every old tile needs to go in the landfill, right?

I get the sustainability angle, but sometimes those “classic” tiles just don’t vibe with the rest of the house, you know? I tried to work with some pink and black tile once—couldn’t make it feel luxe no matter what lighting I used. Ever feel like some design quirks are just too stubborn?

Yeah, I hear you—some of those old tile choices just don’t play nice with modern stuff. I tried to save these avocado green tiles in my bathroom, thinking I’d “embrace the retro.” Regretted it every time I walked in there. Sometimes, saving things for sustainability’s sake just makes the space feel off.

I’ve run into this a lot during renovations. Sometimes, keeping those old tiles just clashes too much with everything else you’re trying to update. Here’s what’s worked for me: first, figure out if the tile can be toned down with neutral paint or new fixtures—sometimes that helps blend things in. If it still feels off, I usually recommend swapping out just a section, like behind the sink, to break up the color without gutting the whole space. It’s a balance between sustainability and actually enjoying your home… I’ve learned you don’t have to keep everything for “character” if it makes you cringe every morning.

Totally get this. I once worked on a 1940s bungalow where the bathroom had these wild mint-green tiles—looked like a hospital, honestly. Tried swapping out just the shower surround with white subway tile, left the rest, and suddenly the whole room felt intentional instead of accidental. Sometimes just breaking up the weirdness is enough. But yeah, I’ve never understood keeping something just because it’s “original” if it makes you miserable.
