BUILDER'S TIMELINE KEEPS SHIFTING—NORMAL OR RED FLAG?

I get where you’re coming from—uncertainty around timelines can be so frustrating, especially when you’re picturing how everything will come together. In my experience, some shifting is almost inevitable, particularly if there are custom finishes or unique materials involved. Still, it’s not unreasonable to expect your builder to keep you in the loop. Communication really is key.

I’ve seen projects where a little delay led to a much better end result, but only because everyone stayed on the same page. If you’re not getting clear updates, it’s fair to ask for more structure. Sometimes just having a candid conversation about your expectations can make a big difference. It’s your space, after all—you deserve to feel confident about the process, even if things get a bit messy along the way.

Had the same thing happen on my last build. At first, I brushed it off—weather delays, supply chain issues, all that. But when the timeline shifted for the third time with no clear reason, I started pushing for weekly updates. Made a world of difference. If your builder isn’t being upfront, that’s when I’d start to worry. Otherwise, a little shifting is par for the course, especially with high-end finishes.

A little shifting is pretty common—weather, permits, subs running late, you name it. But if the builder’s not communicating or can’t give you a straight answer on what’s causing delays, that’s when I’d dig deeper. I’ve seen jobs run long for legit reasons, but transparency is key. Weekly updates are a solid move. If they’re dodging questions or things just don’t add up, that’s a red flag in my book.

I’m in the middle of my first build and the shifting dates are driving me nuts. Some stuff makes sense—rain, supply issues—but when I ask for details and just get vague “we’re working on it” replies, it feels off. I get that things happen, but I want real answers, not just excuses.

That’s exactly what’s been bothering me too. I’m all for being patient when there are legitimate reasons—weather, backordered materials, whatever. But when the updates start sounding like copy-paste responses, it’s hard not to wonder if something bigger is going on behind the scenes. I’ve tried asking for a more detailed schedule or even just a list of what’s left to be done, but sometimes it feels like pulling teeth.

Has anyone here actually managed to get their builder to be more transparent? Did you have to escalate things, or was there a way to open up better communication without making it adversarial? I keep thinking maybe I’m overthinking it, but at the same time, this is such a huge investment... I’d rather be a little annoying now than regret it later.
