Been daydreaming about designing my own place lately, but I'm worried it might be more trouble than it's worth. Anyone here gone through the custom home building process and have some wisdom to share?

Having overseen several custom builds, I'd caution that the romantic idea of designing your own home doesn't always match reality. Costs and timelines often balloon unexpectedly... sometimes a thoughtfully renovated existing property can spare you considerable stress.

I get your point, but honestly, renovating can be just as unpredictable. I've seen friends uncover nightmare issues mid-renovation that totally blew their budget. At least with a custom build, you're starting fresh and know exactly what's behind your walls...
We went the custom route last year, and honestly, it wasn't as stressful as I'd feared. Sure, we had a few surprises—like delays with materials—but knowing exactly what was going into the build gave us peace of mind. Friends who renovated ran into hidden plumbing issues and outdated wiring halfway through... at least with our build we could plan around those things upfront. Either way, expect some curveballs, but starting fresh worked out pretty well for us.
