Honestly, I get the practicality of scribbling on pipes or sticking labels everywhere, but in higher-end homes, that’s just not going to fly. If you’ve invested in custom cabinetry or designer finishes, the last thing you want is a paint pen mark staring back at you every time you open a panel. I’d argue it’s worth spending a little more upfront for professional-grade engraved tags or even digital mapping—there are apps now that let you overlay notes on floor plans. It keeps things organized without sacrificing the look, and you don’t have to worry about sticky residue or faded writing down the line. Sometimes aesthetics matter just as much as function, especially if you care about resale or just want your place to look sharp.

Totally get that. When we did our walkthrough after the build, I was surprised at how many random stickers and marker notes were left behind. My wife was not thrilled. What worked for us was snapping photos of the plumbing setups and saving them in a shared album with notes. That way, we know what’s what without messing up the look. I did try those engraved tags on the main shutoff and water heater—honestly, worth every penny for peace of mind and zero sticky mess.

Engraved tags are a solid move—beats trying to decipher faded marker scribbles years later. I’ve always wondered, though, do you label every valve or just the main ones? I get a little obsessive and end up tagging stuff nobody else cares about...
