KEEPING TRACK OF GOALS: WRITING THEM DOWN OR JUST WINGING IT?

I get the appeal of spreadsheets—conditional formatting is clever, and I’ll admit, seeing a cell turn red does light a fire under you. But honestly, I’ve found that digital tools can be just as easy to ignore as a dusty planner, especially when you’re juggling multiple projects or properties. There’s always another tab open, another notification popping up, and before you know it, the spreadsheet is buried under a dozen browser windows.

I’ve actually gone back to using a physical notebook, but not the kind that sits in the truck untouched. I keep a slim, high-quality leather journal on my desk—something that feels substantial. There’s something about physically writing down a goal or a to-do that makes it stick in my mind. Maybe it’s old-school, but I find the act of writing helps me process what actually matters, instead of just dumping everything into a digital list and hoping I’ll get to it.

Color-coding sticky notes never worked for me either. It just turned into a rainbow mess, and half the time I’d forget what each color meant. At least with a notebook, I can flip back and see what I’ve actually accomplished, which is oddly satisfying. Plus, there’s no risk of accidentally deleting a row or losing data if my laptop crashes.

I get that everyone’s workflow is different, but sometimes the simplest tools are the most effective. Digital systems are great for reminders and recurring tasks, but for big-picture goals? I still think pen and paper wins out. Maybe it’s just habit, but it keeps me grounded when everything else gets chaotic.
