ARE BUILDER REFERENCES REALLY THAT HELPFUL OR JUST FLUFF?

I’ve had a builder own up to a mistake once—he called me before I even noticed the issue. Honestly, that did more for my trust than any glowing reference. Most of the time, though, I find out after the fact. It’s rare to get total honesty upfront.

Honestly, I’ve always wondered about this too. References can sound great on paper, but who’s really giving out the names of clients who had a nightmare experience? I’d rather see how someone handles a screw-up in real time—like your builder calling you before you even noticed. That kind of honesty is way more valuable than a list of handpicked happy customers. Anyone can cherry-pick a few good reviews... but owning mistakes? That’s rare and worth way more in my book.

I get where you’re coming from. When we built our place, I called a couple references and, yeah, they all raved. But honestly, it didn’t tell me much about how the builder handled issues. What actually convinced me was seeing how he dealt with a delay—he owned up to it before I even noticed and explained the fix. That told me way more than any reference list ever could.

That’s actually a solid point. I always ask references about specific problems—like, “Did anything go wrong, and how did the builder handle it?” But honestly, most people just gloss over the details. Has anyone ever gotten a reference who gave really candid feedback, or is it always just the highlight reel?

I’ve noticed the same thing—most references just say “oh, it was great, no issues,” which always makes me a bit suspicious. When we built our place, I actually got one guy who mentioned a miscommunication about the kitchen layout. He said the builder fixed it fast and didn’t make excuses, which honestly told me more than all the glowing reviews combined. I’d rather hear about how someone handles a screw-up than just the perfect stuff. The highlight reel doesn’t help much when you’re knee-deep in drywall dust and delays...
