No build is perfect, but how they handle the hiccups is what really matters.

Couldn’t agree more with this. I always ask, “What’s one thing you wish had gone differently?”—it’s amazing what comes out. Sometimes it’s the little things, like how they handled a paint color mix-up, that tell you way more than the big stuff.

I used to think builder references were just a checkbox, but after building my place last year, I kinda see the value... with a few caveats. Here’s what worked for me: 1) Ask for more than two or three references—if they hesitate, that’s a flag. 2) Actually call them and dig into the awkward stuff, like “Did anything go sideways?” 3) Pay attention to how fast and honestly people answer. If everyone’s just raving with zero downsides, it feels scripted. Real talk: every build has hiccups—if nobody mentions any, I get suspicious.

Totally agree, it’s weird when every reference sounds like a commercial. I actually got the most useful info from someone who admitted their build had delays but still felt listened to. No project is perfect—honest feedback is way more valuable than sugarcoating.

Yeah, I hear you—when every reference sounds like a glowing Yelp review, it’s hard to trust any of them. I actually appreciate when someone mentions the hiccups along the way. Like, if a builder’s reference admits the insulation took longer than planned but they still felt heard and got a solid result, that’s way more useful to me. Does anyone else wonder if builders ever ask their happiest clients to write those “perfect” references? I’d rather know what went sideways and how it got fixed.

Totally agree—those “real talk” references are gold. I’m way more interested in how issues were handled than just hearing everything was perfect. Let’s face it, no build goes 100% smoothly, right? I’d rather see a builder own up to delays or mistakes and show they made it right. That tells me way more about what working with them is actually like.
