Makes me wonder what’s hiding under the mulch.

- I totally get that vibe—when someone keeps talking about the “beautiful yard” but not the plumbing, I start questioning everything.
- References helped me spot red flags, but honestly, most people just want to be polite.
- I tried asking about delays and what they’d change if they could do it over. Got a lot of “well, it all worked out…” which isn’t super helpful.
- Has anyone ever gotten a reference who actually admitted to regrets or issues? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Honestly, most references are like showing off the cleanest room in the house—nobody’s gonna point out the leaky faucet in the basement. Every now and then, you’ll get someone who’s brutally honest, but it’s rare. I’ve had folks tell me after the fact, “Yeah, wish we’d pushed harder on X or Y,” but during the reference call? Crickets. It’s almost like everyone’s afraid to jinx their own project by admitting it wasn’t perfect. If you want real dirt, sometimes you gotta read between the lines... or just check under that mulch yourself.

That’s pretty spot on. I’ve had people ask for references and then only call the ones I know will say nice things. But honestly, if you dig a bit—ask about delays, budget changes, stuff that went sideways—you’ll get more useful info. The “perfect project” doesn’t exist, and anyone claiming otherwise is probably glossing over something.

REFERENCES: USEFUL OR JUST WINDOW DRESSING?

- References are a tool, but yeah, they’re not the whole story.
- When folks ask me, I always suggest they talk to clients where things didn’t go to plan—delays, change orders, even warranty calls. That’s where you see how a builder actually responds.
- No project is flawless. Anyone who says otherwise is either new or not being straight.
- If you want the real scoop, ask about communication during tough spots. That’s usually more telling than a glowing testimonial.
- Had a client once who was way happier with how we fixed a framing error than with the stuff that went right... just goes to show, it’s the messy bits that matter.

I hear you on the “messy bits” being more important than the shiny stuff. Honestly, I’ve seen plenty of folks hand out a list of references where every job was smooth sailing—doesn’t tell you much. Ever tried asking for a reference from a project that went sideways? Curious if anyone’s actually had a builder say no to that, or if most are willing to be upfront about their rough patches.
