I totally get the struggle with trends versus practicality. When we picked out hardware, I was all about the matte black until I saw my niece’s sticky fingerprints everywhere at her place—changed my mind real quick. Brushed nickel isn’t flashy, but it’s been surprisingly low-maintenance for us. Sometimes boring really is better.

Totally get where you’re coming from—matte black hardware looks amazing in photos, but in real life with kids or even just daily use, it’s a fingerprint magnet. I went through a similar thing with polished chrome... looked sleek for about a week, then it was all smudges and water spots. Brushed nickel might not be the “wow” factor, but honestly, it just works and still looks good years later. Sometimes you just want something you don’t have to baby, you know?

I hear you on brushed nickel being practical, but have you tried oil-rubbed bronze? It hides fingerprints way better than matte black or chrome, and it adds a bit more character. I’ve put it in a few homes with kids and it’s held up surprisingly well—plus, it doesn’t show every little smudge. Curious if anyone else has had luck with that finish?

I’ve actually had a similar experience with oil-rubbed bronze—used it in a high-traffic hallway and it’s aged really well, almost develops its own patina over time. I do like the warmth it brings, though I’ll admit sometimes the finish wears on the edges if you’ve got heavy use. Still, for hiding prints and adding some depth, it’s tough to beat. Brushed nickel is classic, but sometimes you want a little more personality, you know?

I hear you on the oil-rubbed bronze—my last apartment had those on every door, and honestly, they did a pretty good job hiding the fingerprints from my kids (and me, let’s be real). But after a couple years, the spots where we grabbed the most started to look a little...well, “vintage” is one word for it. I guess it depends if you like that lived-in look or not. I went with brushed nickel in our new place because it was cheaper and easier to match with other hardware, but sometimes I miss that bit of character.
