Couldn’t agree more about balance. I’ve definitely been guilty of going overboard—ran fiber to every room in my last place, thinking I was being clever. Now half of it’s just sitting there, gathering dust. Sometimes it’s better to focus on making things easy to upgrade later, instead of trying to predict everything up front.
Totally get where you’re coming from. I once spent a weekend running speaker wire through every wall, thinking I’d have surround sound in every room. Ended up using Bluetooth speakers most of the time anyway. Now I just leave access panels and conduit where I can—makes it way easier to adapt when tech changes or I change my mind. Overplanning can be a trap, for sure.
BUILDING BASE STRUCTURES—WHAT IF YOU HAD TO START OVER?
That’s a familiar story—tech moves so fast, it’s almost impossible to predict what’ll actually get used. I’ve definitely been guilty of overengineering things, thinking I’d want every possible feature hardwired in. But honestly, your approach with access panels and conduit is spot on. It’s all about future-proofing without locking yourself into one setup.
One thing I’ve found helpful is mapping out “zones” for flexibility—like, instead of running wire everywhere, just make sure each room has a chase or conduit to a central spot. That way, if you ever want to upgrade or swap out tech, you’re not tearing up drywall. It’s less about planning every detail and more about leaving options open.
Funny enough, I still have a closet full of unused Cat5 cables from my first build... lesson learned. Sometimes less is more, especially when the next big thing is always around the corner.

Haha, I feel that. I’ve got a box labeled “future proofing” that’s basically just old HDMI and speaker wire at this point. Honestly, I used to think more was better, but now I’m all about those hidden conduits and just enough outlets. You never know what’ll be obsolete in five years... or five months.
Honestly, I’m not convinced “future proofing” is even possible anymore. I ran extra coax and Cat6 everywhere thinking I was clever, but now half of it’s just collecting dust. At this point, I’d rather have flexible access panels than a tangle of wires I’ll never use.
