Title: Building Base Structures—What If You Had to Start Over?
I get where you’re coming from, but I’d push back a bit on the idea that running extra wiring is wasted effort. Sure, some of it might not get used right away, but structured cabling can add real value down the line—especially as tech keeps evolving. Wireless isn’t always the answer, and retrofitting later is a pain (and not exactly sustainable). I’d rather have a few unused cables in the walls than tear into drywall when something new comes along. Access panels are great, but they don’t solve everything... sometimes a little “over-prepping” pays off.
sometimes a little “over-prepping” pays off.
Couldn’t agree more with this—future-proofing is underrated. I’ve seen clients regret not thinking ahead, especially when they want to add smart lighting or built-ins later. It’s like laying the groundwork for creativity down the road. Sure, a few extra cables might seem unnecessary now, but it’s way less disruptive than patching up holes later. Planning for flexibility gives you options, and honestly, that’s where the magic happens in design.
- Totally get the logic behind over-prepping, but my wallet always protests.
- That said, I’ve learned the hard way that cutting corners early can cost way more later (hello, surprise electrician bills).
- Sometimes I just ask myself, “Will Future Me thank Present Me for this?” If the answer’s yes, I try to squeeze it in.
- I do draw the line at some stuff, though—like, do I really need wiring for a home theater when I mostly watch Netflix on my laptop?
- Guess it’s all about finding that sweet spot between planning ahead and not going broke.
Title: Building Base Structures—What If You Had To Start Over?
I get where you’re coming from about not wiring for stuff you don’t use, but I’ve gotta say, I’ve regretted skipping “future proofing” more than once. Last house, I figured there was no way I’d ever care about ethernet in the bedrooms—WiFi’s everywhere, right? Fast forward a few years and my kid’s remote learning setup was a nightmare because the signal just wouldn’t reach. Ended up running ugly cables along the baseboards anyway. Not my proudest DIY moment.
But then again, I’ve also wasted money on things I thought I’d need and never touched. Pre-plumbed for a water softener that’s still sitting in the garage, unopened, five years later. It’s a gamble either way.
I guess my take is: if it’s cheap and easy to add now, maybe just do it. If it’s a big expense and you’re not sure you’ll ever use it, probably safe to skip. But man, hindsight is always 20/20 with this stuff...
Totally get where you’re coming from. I once skipped running conduit for motorized shades in the living room—figured I’d never bother. Now, every time I wrestle with those cords, I wish I’d just spent the extra couple hundred bucks up front. But yeah, I’ve also got a central vac system that’s basically a glorified broom closet. It’s always a toss-up. Your “cheap and easy now” rule is pretty much how I try to play it these days... hindsight really does sting sometimes.
