WHEN “SMART” DEVICES AREN’T SO SMART AFTER ALL

But repairs are a pain when something glitches... sometimes it’s just easier to flip a switch.

Totally get this. I’ve seen clients get super frustrated when their “smart” lights won’t connect or the app freezes. Honestly, smart plugs and sensors are a decent compromise. You can automate a few things—like lamps or a coffee maker—without tearing up walls or dealing with a million hubs. Still, I’m not convinced the aesthetics always work out, especially if you end up with chunky adapters everywhere. But yeah, less hassle than rewiring the whole house.

I hear you on the aesthetics—those chunky smart plugs can really mess with a clean look, especially if you’ve put effort into the space. I’ve tried to hide them behind furniture, but then you lose the convenience factor. I keep wondering if it’s worth investing in hardwired smart switches instead, even if it means a bit more upfront work. Has anyone found a solution that actually balances looks, reliability, and ease of use? Sometimes I think we’re just trading one set of headaches for another...

I get where you’re coming from. I tried those smart plugs in my living room, thinking I’d be all high-tech and streamlined. Instead, I ended up with a row of chunky plastic blocks that looked like they belonged in a college dorm, not a space I’d spent months designing. Tried tucking them behind the couch, but then half the time they’d lose connection or I’d have to crawl back there to reset something. Not exactly “smart.”

Eventually, I bit the bullet and had an electrician put in hardwired smart switches. It wasn’t cheap—definitely more upfront hassle—but honestly, it’s been way less frustrating than dealing with plugs everywhere. The switches blend right in and just work (most of the time). Still, every now and then one decides to stop responding until I reboot the hub... so yeah, even the “permanent” solutions aren’t perfect. Sometimes it feels like we’re just swapping out one kind of annoyance for another, but at least my walls look cleaner now.

Yeah, I can relate—I've seen plenty of folks try to retrofit their homes with smart plugs and end up frustrated. Honestly, every time a client asks for a "smart" setup, I warn them: those plug-in gadgets are a band-aid, not a real solution. Hardwired switches are the way to go if you want things to look and feel right, but even then, you’re at the mercy of whatever hub or app is running the show. I’ve had jobs where the Wi-Fi hiccups and suddenly the whole house is stuck in disco mode. It’s wild how we spend all this money and still end up fiddling with tech just to turn off a lamp.
