Had a client once who swapped out a “smart” thermostat for a fancy dinner party, only to have it freeze up and blast the AC in the middle of winter. Ended up pulling the old manual one out of a shoebox - saved the night. Honestly, keeping the backup is just common sense. These gadgets are great when they work, but when they don’t, you want something you can trust. Couldn’t agree more with this. I learned the hard way during our first winter in the new place - smart thermostat decided to “update” itself right as a cold snap hit. Whole house dropped to 60 before I realized what was going on. Ended up digging through boxes for the old dial one, and it worked like a charm.

Here’s what I do now:
1. Keep all the original hardware in a labeled bag or box.
2. If I swap out anything “smart,” I take a photo of the wiring setup before disconnecting.
3. Store a basic screwdriver and batteries nearby - nothing worse than hunting for tools at midnight.
4. Test the backup once a year, just to be sure it still works.

I get the appeal of smart stuff, but honestly, sometimes simple is just better. Not saying I’d ditch all the tech, but having a fallback plan is just peace of mind.
