That’s a solid list—especially the longer screws in the strike plate. It’s wild how many homes still have those tiny ones from the builder. I’ve seen folks overlook window security, too, so your dowel idea is spot on. Have you ever tried motion sensor lights? They’re not too pricey and can be a real deterrent, even if they’re not foolproof. Sometimes it’s just about making your place look like more trouble than it’s worth.

Funny you mention the motion lights—I once installed a couple around my old place, and the neighbor’s cat set them off every night for a week. Still, I’d rather deal with a startled tabby than someone snooping around. I’ve also seen folks use fake security cameras or even just a big “Beware of Dog” sign, even if there’s no dog. Ever tried any of those little tricks, or do you think they’re just for show?

- Tried the fake camera thing once—honestly, it looked so cheap I think it would've fooled exactly no one.
- Motion lights are great, but yeah, every raccoon in the neighborhood thinks my yard is a runway now.
- "Beware of Dog" sign? Haven't done it, but I get why people do. I just worry someone might call my bluff if they actually peek over the fence.
- Ended up just putting locks on everything and keeping valuables out of sight. Not flashy, but it works... so far.
- Honestly, sometimes I think a real dog would be less hassle than all these gadgets and signs.

I hear you on the motion lights—mine go off so often I barely notice anymore, which kind of defeats the purpose. I’m not convinced a real dog is less hassle, though. Vet bills, barking at 3am, and you still need to train them. Personally, I’d rather invest in solid deadbolts and maybe a cheap WiFi camera (the ones that actually work). At least then you’ve got some evidence if something does happen. Signs and fake cameras just seem like wishful thinking to me.

I get the appeal of cameras and deadbolts, but honestly, I’ve seen people break into houses with both—just takes a little more effort on their end. My neighbor had all the gadgets, and someone still got in through a side window. What’s worked best for me is layering things: decent locks, yes, but also some landscaping tricks like thorny bushes under windows. Not glamorous, but nobody wants to crawl through a rose bush at 2am. Sometimes old-school stuff works better than tech.
