If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?

That’s a solid point about the hardware—when I moved in, I was surprised how short the screws were in the door hinges and strike plates. Swapping those out for 3-inch screws made the doors feel way sturdier. I’d add that reinforcing the door frame itself can make a big difference too, especially if you’re in an older house.

I’m with you on fake cameras being kind of pointless. I tried one for a while and honestly, it just made me more paranoid because I knew it wasn’t doing anything. Real WiFi cameras are getting cheaper, but I’d also suggest looking into motion sensor lights. They’re not expensive and just having a bright light pop on is enough to make most people think twice.

One thing I didn’t expect: those little window alarms you stick on with adhesive? They’re loud as heck and cost almost nothing. Not exactly high-tech, but they’ll wake up the whole house if someone tries to open a window at night. Layers really do work better than just relying on one gadget or system.

Yeah, those window alarms are wild—first time mine went off, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a sucker for gadgets, but honestly? Cheap motion lights and swapping out hardware like you mentioned go a long way. I did splurge once on a “smart” doorbell and... let’s just say it was more “quirky” than smart. Sometimes simple really is better.

Funny you mention the “smart” doorbell—I tried one too and half the time it just froze or pinged me about passing cars instead of people. I’ve found that reinforcing door frames and adding longer screws to strike plates is underrated. It’s not flashy, but it makes a real difference. Curious if anyone’s tried DIY camera setups with old phones? Seems like a decent workaround, but I wonder about reliability.

I get where you’re coming from with the physical reinforcements—definitely practical, and you don’t have to worry about batteries or WiFi failing at the worst moment. Still, I’m not convinced it covers everything. If someone’s determined, they’ll just find another way in, right? Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather have a heads-up if someone’s snooping around outside, even if my “smart” doorbell is occasionally more interested in passing squirrels.

About those DIY camera setups with old phones—tried that route once. It’s clever in theory, but in practice? The phone overheated after a few days, and the app kept crashing. Plus, you’re stuck relying on old hardware that might give out at any time. Not to mention the hassle of keeping it plugged in 24/7 without looking totally obvious. Maybe there are more reliable apps now, but I’m still skeptical.

Honestly, I think a mix of both approaches is best. Reinforce what you can physically (doors, windows), but if you’re going to try cameras on a budget, maybe look into some of those cheap WiFi cams rather than repurposing an ancient phone. They’re not perfect—cloud storage fees and all—but at least they’re designed for the job.

It’s tough to find that sweet spot between affordable and actually effective. Sometimes I wonder if a big dog would be cheaper and more reliable than all this tech...

Totally agree on mixing both—physical stuff plus some tech. I tried the old phone-as-camera trick too and yeah, it was more hassle than help. One thing I did that actually worked: cheap window alarms from the dollar store. They’re loud as heck and don’t need WiFi or anything fancy. Not foolproof, but they’d wake the whole block if someone tried a window. Sometimes low-tech is underrated.
