Maybe I’m old school, but there’s something reassuring about a solid metal key in your hand.

Totally get this. I’m a bit of a tech geek, but even I get nervous about relying on batteries for something as basic as getting into my house. My cousin installed a smart lock to save time, but when the app glitched during an update, he was locked out for hours. Made me wonder—are these things actually more reliable long-term, or just a new kind of hassle? Anyone tried those hybrid locks with both keypad and key slot? Curious if they’re worth the extra cost.

- Had a hybrid lock on my last place—keypad plus old-school key backup.
- Batteries died once, but the key saved me from camping on the porch.
- Honestly, I liked having both options.
- Downside: more parts to break, and the keypad looked a bit clunky.
- Still beats getting locked out because my phone decided to update at the worst time...

That’s exactly why I still recommend hybrid locks to clients, even if they look a bit “clunky.” Purely digital systems are sleek, sure, but tech isn’t infallible—batteries, software glitches, or even just a power surge can leave you stranded. Mechanical backup is a small trade-off for real peace of mind. I’d take a slightly bulkier lock over being locked out any day.

- Seen too many folks get locked out with those “smart only” setups.
- Hybrid’s not pretty, but it works when tech doesn’t.
- Curious—anyone actually had a digital lock fail for reasons *other* than batteries? Software bugs, maybe?
- I’ve only had to use the key once, but that was enough for me.

Title: No more fumbling for keys: did you know this?

Had a client last year who went all-in on a fancy smart lock—no key slot, just codes and an app. Looked slick, but after a firmware update, the thing bricked itself. Whole family was stuck outside until we could get a locksmith to basically break in. I get the appeal, but honestly, I always recommend keeping a physical backup. Tech’s great... until it isn’t. Hybrid might not win any beauty contests, but it’s saved more than a few headaches in my experience.
